A dubplate becomes a white label, a radio moment becomes a club anthem, and a small imprint can leave a mark far beyond its home city. The web makes that movement visible, but visibility is not the same as preservation. Pages disappear, links break and credits get separated from the music they explain.

Drum & Bass UK recently argued that an archive should connect releases, artists, labels and the wider culture surrounding them. Its point lands especially hard after the closure of Juno Download: a familiar route into the scene can vanish, even when the records and memories remain. At Bass Nexus, we see this as a reason to document the context while it is still easy to find.

What actually gets lost?

Sometimes it is the file. More often, it is the trail: the producer’s correct name, the MC on a vocal, a catalogue number, the label that took an early chance, or the mix that introduced a tune to a new audience. Search results cannot recover a credit nobody recorded. A social post may capture the moment, but it is a fragile home for the full story.

There is also a difference between preserving information and claiming ownership of someone else’s work. An editorial archive can retain verified names, release dates, links, artwork credits and interviews while directing readers to the people who made the music. Audio, photographs and artwork need their own permissions.

Our editorial view: the most useful archive is one that helps listeners discover the creators and lets those creators be credited accurately.

A practical starting point

Keep the masters and exports. Store original projects, final files and at least one independent backup; check periodically that they still open.

Record complete metadata. Artist and contributor names, mix versions, label, catalogue number, release date and artwork credit should travel together.

Save the story. Document where a track emerged, who supported it and how the release changed over time, with permission where needed.

Review the links. Maintain a page you control and update destinations when platforms change. An old link should lead readers toward a current source.

Culture is a network

Drum & bass history does not sit in one folder or one city. It lives in record shops, radio shows, studios, club sets and conversations across generations. Good documentation makes those connections legible. The immediate work is modest: credit carefully, link responsibly and keep copies of material you have the right to preserve. Over years, those small habits become an account of how a sound travelled.

Explore the scene from the source.Read the original perspective ↗

Further reading: Drum & Bass UK’s preservation editorial and LoveThatBass on Juno Download.
